Carpenter Tree One

On the far side of my pond, many years ago, a tree had fallen over in a storm. The trunk and limbs had been cleared away leaving only a three foot high stump to record where the tree had once lived. Walking my yard as I frequently do I found that a nest of carpenter ants had taken up residence in the old stump and were gradually eating it away. Some areas of the remains were like sheets of paper, so thin and delicate. This was so facinating a sight that I did three paintings altogether of the "Carpenter Tree".
