The Intimate Forest

A Celebration of the Beauty of Nature in Oil Paintings by Harlan

frog with fall leaves

4'x3' 1998 $2500

It is not uncommon for me to see toads among the leaves as I walk through my woods but rarely do I come upon a frog. This one took shelter in the curve of an old rotting log surrounded by so many beautiful fall leaves. I could have very easily overlooked this small fellow but I'm very happy I didn't. The reference photo for this painting was in slide format. To be able to view the reference I had to project it on the far wall of my studio. It was quite a problem to create an area that was dark enough to allow me to see the slide and yet still provide proper lighting for my canvas. The additional disadvantage of using a slide was the length of time that it had to be projected. By the time I finished this painting, all the colors had burnt out of the slide leaving it a muddy brown.
