Pernicious Weed

30x40 2003

Many years ago this mysterious ground cover appeared in my yard. I liked it. It spread beautifully and had lovely, small blossoms in the Spring. I liked it so much I took a sample to the garden center hoping I would be able to buy more in flats. I was told this plant was a "pernicious weed". It is actually a native violet. It took me years to discover its real identity.

The first appearance of this lovely ground cover was near an old oak stump. The stump, in the process of decay, would develop great masses of fungus in the early summer. The combination of the three, "weed", fungus and stump were delightful and had to be painted!
