The Intimate Forest

A Celebration of the Beauty of Nature in Oil Paintings by Harlan

Red Fall

30x24 1996 $800

Every fall I take long walks looking at the leaves that have fallen. What captured me about this particular scene was the one red maple leaf among all the brown leaves. The background areas in this painting were painted with more blue than I usually use for shadow areas but that choice helped to really make the leaves stand out. This is a very bad photograph of a very beautiful painting. This painting is already varnished and varnish and photography often do not get along. I find it a bit ironic that the varnish, which protects the painting, can bring back life to the colors used when viewing the painting in person can also cause the colors to lessen when photographed.
